REPORTMILL HAS JAVA WEB START SUCCESS
Dallas, TX - June 07, 2005 –ReportMill Software has
reached a milestone by providing their third major release of their flagship
product. ReportMill 8.0, using Java Web Start technology. Java Web Start
technology has allowed ReportMill and ReportMill’s customers to
package their Java reporting solution in a web based package. This not
only enriches their user’s evaluation experience, but provides a
consistent method of updating builds . ReportMill has even won recognition
as the best Java Web Start application available (Cardsharp on Software).
One-click Evaluation of a java application
ReportMill's evaluation sees remarkably high traffic - in part because
customers can test drive the ReportMill java reporting solution with no
more effort than viewing a new web page. Gone are the steps: Download,
uncompress, install, execute (and often uninstall). Gone also is the risk
and inconvenience of polluting the local hard disk with the results of
an installer package.
Automatic Updates
Prior to Java Web Start, the normal process of downloadable updates and
patches meant supporting many different versions. Gone is the phrase "Can
you download the latest patch and try again?". With Java Web Start's
auto-updating, customers are always all running the same update. This
increases quality and reduces support. Best of all, it means greater customer
satisfaction because customers don't stumble over the same bugs previously
found by others.
Consistent, Unified Packaging
The download page at most software sites resembles the arrival board
at major airports. ReportMill has boiled this down to a single link: "Click
here to Run". Even better, the release control process consists
of updating a single jar file, without the need for build scripts or
install package generators. Despite the administrative ease, the result
is consistently platform friendly: as the install creates a desktop alias
and program group on Windows and a dockable, double-clickable on Mac
OS X.
Inspiring Others
ReportMill's simple, hassle-free packaging also makes it easy for customers
to incorporate ReportMill into their own applications. Taylor Publishing,
one of the nation's largest yearbook publishers is incorporating the ReportMill
page layout editor into a Java/Macromedia-Flex based web application,
using a clever hand off mechanism to make these two web based applications
work well with each other. ABCS Inc. is incorporating ReportMill into
a Java Web Start version of their popular accounting package, a process
made easier by ReportMill's current web start packaging.
Future Directions
ReportMill is years ahead of other Java reporting systems with its simple
web based packaging. Even now, it is possible to dynamically launch the
ReportMill template editor from any web or desktop application. Customers
are using ReportMill to load and save templates from web databases instead
of local file systems. Future applications will web-launch ReportMill
to open and save templates, offering the ultimate in custom reporting.
